Spot fixing in IPL

18 May 2013

This refers to the article
‘Day of shame’ (KT, May 17). The arrest of Rajasthan Royal players. Sreesanth, Chandila and Ankit Chavan has
created a stir in the media. This alleged illicit action has not only brought disgrace to the world of cricket, but also shown that how some people can bring their own downfall in the hot pursuit of making a quick buck.
Sreesanth is a controversial player, who is always in the news for wrong reasons. He was a promising player when he made his foray into the world of cricket. But instead of honing his cricketing
skill and learning nuances of the game, he indulged in strange acts that almost ended his career. Now a test discard, he was lucky to be picked up by the Rajasthan Royal owners. Chandila and Chavan are lesser-known players whose career would have picked up had they not indulged in match fixing. But greed is a terrible thing. The huge amount of money offer might have been too tempting to resist cheating.
IPL is the richest cricket league that attracts the best players on large contracts. The competition generates huge level of gambling, betting, corruption, bribery and spot fixing. Such incidents bring disrepute to the game. These players have caused a stir with their wrong deeds. Though they are yet to prove guilty, there cannot be fire without smoke.
