Attack on Afghan government compound kills 5

(AP) / 17 May 2012

Officials say a group of militants has attacked a government compound in western Afghanistan, killing at least five people.

Police officer Mohammad Asif says the militants first fired a grenade at the gate of the governor’s complex in Farah province on Thursday , then stormed into it. He says the fighting is ongoing.

Asif says four police officers have been killed and he himself has been wounded in Thursday’s attack. But a local hospital official, Abdul Jabar Shahyeq, says five people have been killed and 10 were wounded.

Provincial official Abdul Ghani Noorzai says at least three militants are in the compound battling with security forces.
