The Al Wasl FC management has decided to terminate Diego Maradona’s contract with the club’s senior football squad with immediate effect, it was confirmed on Tuesday night.
The former football legend joined the Dubai-based club last year, but failed to make his mark and the former champions ended the season empty-handed.
In the UAE Pro-League, Al Wasl finished a poor eighth, and did nothing of note in the President’s and the Etisalat cups.
Even after winning the away leg of the GCC Club Championship 3-1 in Manama, they were beaten 1-3 at home and were dethroned by Bahrain’s Al Muharraq Club.
Maradona’s conduct on and off the pitch was also questionable on many occasions. He was allegedly accused of abusing players on various occasions.
